How to Hook Up a Fifth Wheel RV
Before you hit the road on your next adventure, properly attach your fifth-wheel travel trailer by taking the following steps
- Ensure you have installed your fifth wheel hitch the right way. The hitch should sit so the trailer's pin is located an inch in front of the center point of your truck's wheel axle. Follow the instructions as closely as possible.
- Always remember to connect your trailer on a level surface and use wheel chucks to keep it from moving.
- Ensure you have enough room to get underneath the trailer.
- Use your fifth-wheel's landing gear and adjust the trailer's height so that the bottom plate of the pin box is an inch lower than the fifth-wheel plate.
- Open the hitch's jaws. Continue backing up so that the trailer's pin rides up the fifth-wheel hitch into the jaws.
- Failure to align correctly could lead to damage to your hitch.
- Connect the emergency breakaway cable to a permanent piece of the truck. This force's the trailer's brakes to activate if the two become separated.
- Perform a pull test to ensure everything is connected correctly. If there are no issues, raise the landing gear and remove the wheel chucks. You're ready to go!
